~30th April 2010~

Followed Mr. Law to a site meeting at Rawang for the double-storey terrace house project.

The site meeting was about the show house.

~29th April 2010~

Prepared report for the site visit which include brief explanation of the site condition using the photos taken at the actual site.

~28th April 2010~

Went for site survey at Bandar Sri Damansara.

Location 1. Sector 'B' Sri Damansara
- to verify the types of buildings in the area so as to enable calculation of the total water demand for that area

Location 2. Persiaran Perdana
- to survey the actual site condition and taken a few photos at different spot along Persiaran Perdana.

~27th April 2010~

Went through the layout plan of Sri Damansara Sector 'B' and calculated the total water supply demand for that area.

Divided the area into several sub-area so as to have a clearer picture of the actual location for tomorrow's site survey.

Studied through Mr. Law's pumphouse calculation report where used yield line design method to calculate the moment acting on the wall of the pumphouse.

~26th April 2010~

Measured the length of road curb, the area of walk path, road resurfacing and road widening for the calculation of cost for upgrading the main road along Persiaran Perdana at Bandar Sri Damansara.

~21st April - 23rd April 2010~

These days are used to continue with the remaining beams checking of the double-storey terrace house project.

~20th April 2010~

Today I measured the length and calculate the area for an earthwork project, i.e. length of berm drain, length of hoarding, length of temporary earth drain, are of cut/fill and etc.

The measured values are to be inserted for BQ purpose to estimate the overall project cost.

~19th April 2010~

Ir. Lim Guan Hock briefed us through about the renovation work to be done for the main terminal building (MTB) of the Penang International Airport for expansion purposes.

The infra department is in-charge of relocating the existing water and sewer lines for the expended MTB.

Ir. Lim requested me to identify the existing washroom locations and the sewer and water pipes going through MTB by using different colours to illustrate it.

With this illustration, we were able to create a new pipeline for those pipes that are affected from the works.

Double-Storey Terrace House Project at Rawang

After completing load distribution on each beams, started calculating the load acting on each beams such as wall load, self-weight of beam, slab load, etc. With all the load acting on each beam calculated, max moment acting on the beam can be calculate then the reinforcement steel bars required can be calculate using BS8110: Part 1:1997 Clause 3.4.4.4.

Checking of each beam of every floor, i.e. ground floor beams, first floor beams, roof beams and upper roof beams.

~12 April 2010~

Today whole day checking the beam size and reinforcement steel bars for a beam of a double-storey terrace house. Basic requirement is to come out with the bending moment diagram to show how the moment is distributed and identify the maximum moment acting on the beam. Due to basic knowledge is not strong enough, it takes the whole day to just calculate the it. Finally manage to calculate it and found that the original design was under-design. Will check again tomorrow to confirm correct or not my calculation.

*All calculation are done by manual (hand) calculation due to my department is infra department, meaning that we don't have structural software in our department.

Basic Info

T12 means high tensile deformed reinforcement steel bar with characteristic yield strength of 460 N/mm² of 12mm diameter.

R12 means mild steel round bar with characteristic yield strength of 250 N/mm² of 12mm diameter.

Water evaporation rate in Malaysia (drought season) = 6 mm/day

1st Week of Industrial Training

~5th April 2010~
Arrived at Zaidun-Leeng Sdn. Bhd. about 8.10am and went to the reception counter to report myself. Met with Ms. Josephine (account department) to get my access card (same as UNITEN ID where I have to tag in and out of the building to record my 'attendance').
Then, went to Infrastructure Department to report to Ir. Lim Guan Hock, Director of Infra Department. Ir. Lim brief us what I will get learn from this industrial training and then requested Ir. Peter Lim (an associate) to give me things to do and learn from it. Was then introduced to another engineer, Mr. Law Lok Heng. I will be helping Mr. Law on his on-going project includes Landfill, Double-Storey Terrace Housing, and much more. First thing I did was to design a RC Sump.

~6th April 2010~
2nd day, was requested to use AutoCAD to input borehole points of a site. Later was given a set of soil investigation test result to read through it, the SI method they used is the Soil Replacement Test and Field Density Test (FDT). Quickly finished it then went to help up another trainee with the cargo plane hanger project in Pulau Penang. We determine the ponding area of the hanger and calculate the area of it. It was simple but it takes time to complete it as we are not using any software to determine, all by hand and pen.

~7th April 2010~
Continue with the cargo plane hanger project, Ir. Lim requested us to draw a few cross section of the critical area to illustrate the level of ponding area. Later continue with the sump design which did'nt manage to complete it on monday.

~8th April 2010~
Started with identifying the cut and fill area which need on a hill top double-storey terrace houses on a contour layout plan, then transfer into the AutoCAD drawing by marking the cut/fill area with red and blue '-' & '+' signs. Then was asked to do correction of a double-storey house structural drawings using red pen. I learn how to read a structural drawing from it as well.

~9th April 2010~
Continue with the double-storey terrace houses structural drawings. After identifying the errors in the drawings, I was requested to check the beam and column of the structure to determine is over-design or otherwise. Minimum beam dimension usually used is 150mm x 300mm and steel bar of T12 for main reinforcement. I checked the beam which is not the minimum size to determine whether it needed such larger beam size. To determine it, I was told to identify the load distribution on the beam then calculate the moment and shear the beam is carrying and then check the beam size and steel bars size. If can reduce the size is better as it will reduce the overall construction cost.

*End of 1st week, holiday for 2 days ^^
